Mahjong Tile Size Guide: Standard, Large and Mini Tiles in mm and Inches

There is no official mahjong tile size. Standard American tiles are about 30 x 23 x 13 mm (1.2 x 0.9 x 0.5 in.), and large Chinese tiles run near 40 x 30 x 22 mm. Words like "medium" and "large" mean different things from one seller to the next, so compare the millimeters, not the label.
Size matters three ways. Reading. Racks. Table space. The checks below cover each one with numbers you can test against a listing before you buy anything.
What sizes do sellers actually list?
These are sizes printed on real listings, height x width x thickness, and we took one listing per size class from a single retailer so the numbers are measured the same way.

Notice the labels. One American tile set sold as "medium" measures 30 x 23 x 13 mm, exactly the size another listing calls standard. That's why the table above leads with numbers.
Will bigger tiles fit American racks?
Usually not. American racks are built to hold a wall of 19 stacks, so multiply the tile width by 19 and compare it with the rack's inside length.

The 18 in. figure comes from one American set's listed rack length (18 x 2.4 x 1 in.). Racks vary. Measure yours. Thickness matters too: a 21.5 mm tile won't stand in a rack slot cut for 13 mm.
How much table do the walls need?
For Chinese play with 18-stack walls, each wall is 18 x tile width long.

The 4 walls form a square. Players also need room in front for their own tiles and discards. With 40 mm tiles, the wall square alone is about 21 in. on each side, so a small card table gets crowded fast, and it's worth measuring yours before you order the larger size.
Which size suits which players?

Big isn't the only fix. Bold numerals and stronger colors on a standard 30 mm tile can be easier to read than a plain 40 mm tile, and they still fit the racks you own.
