Mahjong Racks, Pushers and Accessories: What You Need and What to Check
Links marked (paid link) go to Amazon. We have not tested these products; this page compares listed specifications only.
For American mahjong you need 4 racks, ideally with pushers, plus 2 or 3 dice and one NMJL card per player. Everything else is optional. Chinese and Hong Kong games need only the tiles and dice, and racks there are a convenience that many family tables happily do without for years.
Most "complete" sets already include racks, dice and a wind indicator, so check the contents list of your own set before you buy anything on this page separately.

Which accessories do you actually need?
| Item | American | Chinese / HK | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Racks, 4 | Needed | Optional | Hold your 13 or 14 tiles upright and your exposures on top |
| Pushers, 4 | Strongly useful | Optional | Slide a finished wall to the center in one move |
| Dice, 2 or 3 | Needed | Needed | Pick where the wall breaks |
| NMJL card, 1 per player | Needed | Not used | Lists this year's winning hands; sold by the League, not in sets |
| Wind indicator | Optional | Useful | Tracks the dealer and the round wind |
| Scoring coins or chips | Optional | Optional | Track payments without paper |
| Table mat | Optional | Optional | Quieter shuffles; keeps tiles from sliding |
| Joker stickers or spare jokers | For converting a set | Not used | Add jokers to blank tiles |
The NMJL card is the one item you can't replace with a substitute, and because it changes every year and comes from the League directly, it isn't one of the products listed below.
How do you check that racks fit your tiles?
An American rack holds a wall of 19 stacks, so multiply your tile width by 19 and compare the result with the rack's inside length. Shorter fits. Longer doesn't.
Worked check: tiles listed at 23 mm (0.9 inches) wide need 19 x 23 = 437 mm, or 17.2 inches of rack. One set's racks are listed at 18 x 2.4 x 1 inches, so those tiles fit with 0.8 inches to spare. Large Chinese tiles? At 29.5 mm (1.16 inches) wide they need 560.5 mm, or 22.1 inches. No fit.
Thickness is the other number. Rack ledges are cut for standard tiles about 13 mm (1/2 inch) thick, and a 19 or 21 mm Chinese tile may sit at an angle or slide off when you push the wall out. Our tile size guide lists real tile sizes in mm and inches.
What kinds of pushers are there?
Two common designs show up on listings, and the wording usually tells you which one you're looking at. Some racks have a pusher arm hinged or fixed to the rack. Others use a separate bar that attaches with magnets to the top or back of the rack, then lifts off for storage.
Same job. Two questions decide it. Does the pusher reach the full 19-stack length? Does the set still close in its case with pushers attached? A listing should say which design it uses, and if it only says "racks," assume there are no pushers in the box at all.
What else is worth checking?
Dice: any standard dice work, and almost every set includes 2 or 3, so this is the item you're least likely to need to buy on its own.
Wind indicator: a small dial or cube showing East and the round wind. Handy in Hong Kong games, where the dealer can stay East for several hands in a row.
Scoring coins: American groups that track payments often use coins in several colors, one color per value. Count the pieces against your group's habits, since 4 players each need enough to pay a few hands in a row before the coins come back around.
Joker stickers: for adding jokers to blank tiles. Look for a sticker listed slightly smaller than your tile face, given in mm. A 30 x 23 mm tile face needs a sticker under that size on both sides. Our jokers page explains why you need exactly 8 in play.
Mats: measure the wall square first. Four 19-stack walls of 23 mm tiles make a square about 17 in. on a side, before your racks and discard space.
Accessories to compare by specification
Each group below holds at most 3 listings, chosen because the listed specifications match the checks above. Product names, links and images load from Amazon's API when the page is built; until then each slot shows the specs to match.
