Automatic Mahjong Tables Explained: How They Work and What to Check Before Buying

An automatic mahjong table shuffles the tiles and builds all 4 walls for you. You push the used tiles into a hole in the center, and while you play with one set, the machine shuffles a second set underneath. Before buying, check 5 things: the power rating, the tile size, whether it supports your style (American needs jokers and 19-stack walls), the table's size and weight, and how the tiles are replaced.

These tables are heavy, electric and hard to return. Check twice.

How does an automatic table work?

The tiles have a steel or magnetic core. When the hand ends, players sweep the tiles into the center opening, and inside, the table mixes them and lifts them into 4 walls that rise through slots in front of each seat. Done.

That's why tables ship with 2 sets of tiles, usually in 2 back colors, so that one set is on the table while the other is being shuffled below. With 144-tile Chinese sets, that's 288 tiles in the machine.

Your own tiles won't work. The magnetic tiles are matched to the machine.

Does it support American mahjong?

Check this first. An American game needs 152 tiles in play, including 8 jokers, built into walls of 19 stacks. Not 18. A machine built for Chinese play makes walls of 17 or 18 stacks from 136 or 144 tiles.

StyleTiles per set in playWalls the machine must build
American (NMJL)152, with 8 jokers4 x 19 stacks
Chinese / Hong Kong1444 x 18 stacks
Chinese without flowers1364 x 17 stacks

Some US listings name American play directly, list 152 or 166 numbered tiles, and include racks or sell them separately. If a listing doesn't mention jokers or a tile count, ask before you buy. Arabic numerals on the tiles matter too, since they make the NMJL card easier to follow.

Will it run on US power?

Look for a rating of 110 to 120 volts and a standard US plug; some listings spell out a 110V motor, the plug type and the cable length in feet. A table built for 220V use elsewhere is the wrong product. Don't modify it. Rewiring or adapting the electrics is a job for the manufacturer or a licensed electrician.

Check cable length too. Mid-room tables sit far from outlets.

What tile size and table size should you expect?

Listings we read in 2026 for US buyers offered tiles of 36 mm and 40 mm, larger than the roughly 30 mm tile in a standard American set. Bigger tiles, bigger racks. If you want to keep your existing racks, check whether the listing includes racks sized for its own tiles.

Our tile size guide converts common tile sizes to inches and shows how much table each one needs.

Is an automatic table worth it?

Depends on how often you play. For a weekly American group, the time saved on shuffling and building is real: walls go up with no hand-building at all. For a group that plays a few times a year, a regular set with racks and pushers does the same job for far less space.

We don't rank these tables. Our job is the checks.

Tables to compare by specification

Each group below holds at most 3 listings, chosen because the listed specifications match the checks above. Product names, links and images load from Amazon's API when the page is built; until then each slot shows the specs to match.
